Our Fascination with Tim Hortons

Roll Up the Rim!

Roll Up the Rim!

What is our fascination in Canada with Tim Hortons? Sure, I like Starbucks as much as the next dude, but Timmies hits closer to home than any yuppie driven corporate coffee place.

Tim Hortons is where I hung out with my friends, a place to meet for a coffee and smoke countless cigarettes while we talked about shit that no one remembers. Where the term double double started and was added to Websters dictionary.

Where Roooollllll Up the Rim became the mark of spring coming, and the beginning of hockey playoffs starting.
I can’t say I love Tim Hortons coffee, but I think I’ve drank so much over the years that my blood is the colour of the red and orange that makes it recognizable. When the one down from my work closed at 1100 PM one summer cause they couldn’t get staff, there was almost a riot on the night shift, then a sense of loss. We needed a place to drive through and get our fix or normalcy.

I believe Tim Hortons care about us, what other company actually puts signs up prior to raising the price of a cup of coffee, and apologizes about it. They don’t place blame, only heart felt sympathy cause it’s out of their hands.

Hell, they put a a Timmies in Kandahar, in the middle of a war zone.  Only Canadians would do that.

Now, I know that Tim Hortons was sold to Wendy’s in 1992, but no longer.  Tim Hortons is now a stand-alone public company trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, with it’s  corporate head office in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

I do get disgusted though when a cup of brew isn’t made with the love it deserves by some disgruntled employee. When they’ve hired someone that doesn’t appreciate the history and warmth that Tim Hortons has, the coffee reflects these feelings and becomes bitter and mean, not soothing and pure.

I won’t stop going to Tims, despite the fact there is much better coffee out there, but where to find it at 3 am, when you need your fix.

I’ll make mine a double-donke and I rolled up a rim to play again.
