This Is What We Live For.
The mantra all season of the most amazing run of the Vancouver Canucks hockey team.
Words cannot explain the tension, excitment and pride we in British Columbia have for this hockey team. We have waited 17 years for the Canucks to redeem themselves in a Stanley Cup Final, and 40 years for a chance to hoist the most coveted prize in hockey, Lord Stanley’s Cup.
Not since the Olympics has Vancouver been on the edge of excitement and pride, and it’s not just a city. It’s a province, and it’s a country.
We are Canadians, who have not held the Stanley Cup in our country since 1993, when the Montreal Canadians beat the Los Angeles Kings.
Hockey is a part of Canada, it’s our national sport, and during the tough years of the National Hockey League trying to recapture market shares and a lower Canadian dollar, teams started popping up in the States. The Winnipeg Jets got moved to Phoenix, the Quebec Nordiques folded, and we had
to watch American teams take Lord Stanley’s Cup back home time and time again.
Some say that Canadians don’t have a sense of patriotism like other countries, but the Olympics proved that wrong. I was walking down Vancouver streets and Oh Canada was being sung by crowds in intersections, and this phenomoen has started again. It’s so difficult to explain the mindset Vancouver Canucks fans have, it’s not just about the team.
In Boston, home of the Bruins, one of the original six NHL teams where the Canucks have been thrashed twice, it’s about the team and the city. In Vancouver, it’s partially the city, it’s partially the province, but primarily it’s about the country of Canada.
This series is about Canadian pride, this series is about bringing home the Stanley Cup back to Canada. The Vancouver Canucks will bring the cup home.
We are all Canucks.
